Thin places are described in Celtic spirituality as places where the space between heaven and earth is thinner, or in more secular terms, they are spaces that invite us to connect with things beyond ourselves.  This concert, titled Thin Places to evoke this concept, presented the world premiere performances of musical works written for Intersection in celebration of our 10th season.

Gary Powell Nash’s Look for the Helpers is largely based on and inspired by the tragic shootings at the Covenant School in Nashville, TN and Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, both occurring around the same time in 2023. Composer Sungji Hong's  Igerthi for Piano and Sinfonietta is a piano concerto specifically written for Jihye Chang with funds from Hong’s Guggenheim Fellowship.  The work takes its title from the Greek text for “He has risen”.  Pianist Jihye Chang will perform two solo works written for her inspired by the chorale Ein Feste Burg and Edgar Allen Poe's poem The Bells.  These works celebrate humanity and the forces that embrace us.

At Trinity Presbyterian Church we experienced these works for the first time with an ensemble of 15 players and the virtuoso playing of Jihye Chang on piano.

Upon These Shoulders:
Juneteenth at the Tennessee State Museum

Saturday, June 15, 2024 - 1pm

Tennessee State Museum

1000 Rosa L Parks Blvd

Nashville, Tennessee

Upon These Shoulders is an annual event, launched in 2017 by Choral Arts Link and Intersection, working with community partners to celebrate the many heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, historically and today. Performances in this series have included the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by composer Jonathan Bailey Holland exploring race, equity and youth; a celebration of the music of Florence Price, and a 10 day residency by composer and performer Hannibal Lokumbe.

This year, in lieu of our formal Upon These Shoulders event, we are thrilled to be a part of the Tennessee State Museum's Annual Juneteenth Celebration!   We will have a string quartet of intersection musicians performing contemporary works by Rhiannon Giddens, Charlton Singleton and more.
