Upon These Shoulders: Step by Step honors and artistically explores historic impressions in the African American journal of racial equity and cultural inclusiveness through footprints of yesterday and today. This event featured musical performances by Choral Arts Link, Intersection and Nashville Symphony's Accelerando students woven together with interviews and spoken word, hosted by the National Museum of African American Music. Specific repertoire included works by Jessie Montgomery and George Walker.

Upon These Shoulders is an annual event, launched in 2017 by Choral Arts Link and Intersection, working with community partners to celebrate the many heroes of the Civil Rights Movement, historically and today. Performances in this series have included the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by composer Jonathan Bailey Holland exploring race, equity and youth; a celebration of the music of Florence Price, and a 10 day residency by composer and performer Hannibal Lokumbe.

ECHO

People, Places, Things

Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 6:30pm

Venue: The Parthenon - Centennial Park

Presented by the ECHO Chamber Music Series at the Parthenon

People, Places, Things is a film by artist Lesa Dowdy, scored by composer Benjamin Chakoian Jones, and performed by INTERSECTION. On February 27th, the project will be premiered live in the Parthenon’s Naos room with the film projected on screen while INTERSECTION provides a live soundtrack for the audience in real time.

This project was born out of a collaboration between the Nashville Metro Archives’ Audiovisual Heritage Center (AVHC).  Filmmaker Lesa Dowdy was invited to incorporate historic audiovisual recordings at the AVHC in the creation of a new work to premiere at the Parthenon as part of Centennial Park Conservancy’s ECHO chamber music series. Lesa worked with Metro archivists to choose endangered analog audiovisual materials for preservation, some of which have not been seen in decades. Lesa also collaborated with composer Benjamin Chakoian Jones and INTERSECTION to create a soundtrack for this engaging 45 minute film.

Featuring -  Alicia Enstrom, Violin, Alessandra Volpi, Piano and Benjamin Chakoian Jones, Bass.
